=1= INTRODUCTION
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Oi, welcome to my guide on the black tarot card system of Painkiller. This
guide gives info, only on how to get the cards, not on how to beat the levels.
This CONTAINS SPOILERS! So be warned! If you see information in this guide that
is incorrect, feel free to e-mail me at p0tatz@hotmail.com and be sure to put
'black tarot guide' or something along those lines in the title of the e-mail.
Do not modify this guide, use it for profit, or pass it off as your own work.
Feel free to link to this guide but do not host it on your website (unless with
my consent, which I won't give to any more websites, so please don't ask). I
think that about covers everything. If you're looking for tips on how to
achieve the cards for each level, use the level specific card list. If you're
just looking for a quick chart to show you requirements and the card gained
from them, check the quick card list. If you know a better way to get the
cards or requirements than what I am using in this guide, feel free to e-mail
me. If you have questions, opinions, etc feel free to e-mail me too. If you ask
me questions on how to beat bosses, or 'Can my computer run Painkiller???' then
I will ignore you. Huda has written a guide specifically for killing the bosses
and it's not hard to find the minimum system requirements either
(www.painkillergame.com). There is also a great site for movies on finding the
secrets at www.painkillerhell.com. Thanks to all the people who have given me
their opinions and tips, and to people can fly for making such a great game.
The only websites allowed to host this guide are Gamefaqs.com, Gamespot.com,
DLH.net and FAQS.IGN.COM. If you saw this guide hosted on any other site or if
you had to pay to view this, please e-mail me at p0tatz@hotmail.com with the
website address, again with a title of black tarot guide, or something like
that, so I know it's not spam. The latest version of this guide will be
uploaded to Gamefaqs.com before any other sites. Sorry, but I don't have the
time to keep this guide updated on all the sites at once.

=2= BLACK TAROT CARDS : A BRIEF RUNDOWN
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Black tarot cards are the powerups acquired from beating levels in certain
ways. In the map screen, you can enter the black tarot board screen, which
will allow you to equip any tarot cards you have unlocked. Tarot cards cost
money to place on this board, or equip. This money can be collected in the
game's levels, and comes in the form of coins and artifacts. There are two
types of cards. Silver cards add permanent bonuses that are always active
whenever you play. Gold cards must be activated in game, by default the 'E'
key, and will last a certain amount of time before their effects wear away.
You can equip 2 silver cards, which are located along the top of the board,
and you can equip 3 gold cards, which are located along the bottom. Some
things you might not know about the cards are:
-They are transferable between games. Meaning after you beat the game and start
a new game, you have the option of retaining all the cards you have already
earned. You can still retain your cards if you choose to play Daydream mode,
you just can't use them.
-On insomnia mode, you can only earn 22 of the cards, in nightmare mode you can
earn 23 cards, and on trauma mode, you can earn all 24 of the cards. This is
because certain levels are locked on lesser difficulty levels.
-You can open the trauma difficulty level by collecting 23 cards.
-If you equip two cards that modify the same thing, the game will not add both
of their effects, it will only take the highest card. For example, by equipping
both the forgiveness and mercy card, you can't use gold cards 5 times, you can
only use them 3 times, since mercy is the higher card of the two.
-You can't activate individual cards from the ones you have equipped. When you
activate the cards, you activate all equipped gold cards.

=3= General Tips For Acquiring Cards
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
-Try and get the card on your own before you resort to using a guide. Part of
the fun is actually trying yourself and not just reading instructions on how
you should be doing it. You should only use this guide when you actually get
angry at the game, like when you can't find the last secret out of 6 and you've
been playing the level for 2 hours =)
-The stats screen, by default the TAB key, is your god. Use it to check the
requirements for the card, and how many of the requirements you may have
completed so far.
-An enemy or object destroyed by ANY MEANS will count on your stats screen.
If an enemy dies by falling, explodes himself, gets killed by another enemy or
gets killed by you, it will always count as a kill. Likewise if an object is
destroyed by an enemy, blows up on its own, or you smash it, it will count
towards your objects destroyed score.
-If you open the exit for a level, all doors in the level become unlocked,
allowing you to backtrack, and, in *MOST* cases, find anything you may have
missed. There are exceptions like the two levels where you must kill all
enemies, in which you have to kill all the enemies as you go, you won't be able
to go back and kill them if you go too far past them and/or open the exit
before killing them.
-If you don't know what bunnyhopping is, its basically strafing from side to
side and moving your mouse so that you move very fast and hop around like a
rabbit. Painkiller dumbed down the technique heavily, so that theres not even
any strafing involved, and anyone can use it. Instead of strafing, all you do
is hold down forward, and keep jumping. As soon as you land, jump again. Then
repeat. You'll notice you'll start to move very fast. You can use this
technique to clear large gaps, outrun enemies, etc.
-On the boss levels where you have to beat them under a certain time limit, you
should equip gold cards to deal maximum damage. Don't equip any of the speed
reducing cards, as these are defensive and will waste your time. Fury, Rage,
Dexterity, either of the time bonus cards and Forgiveness or Mercy will all
help out greatly. Don't forget that when equipping two cards that modify
something, the game only takes the highest card, so equipping both fury and
rage is really just wasting a gold card spot. My favorite combo for damage is
the silver mercy card, and dexterity, rage and double time bonus gold cards.
-Multijumping is basically hitting the jump key over and over to gradually
scale an area that you usually wouldn't be able to climb by simply holding
forward. It usually works best in corners or on steep surfaces.
-Someone E-mailed me this tip. Every 4 direct hits on an enemy corpse with the
Painkiller's secondary fire will make them drop a small jewel worth 15 gold.
This won't work if the corpse gets gibbed, and gold gained this way doesn't
count towards the requirement of getting 500 gold on level 1-4, but it does
help if you need more money for cards or just want to look cool by getting
abnormally high gold score. On top of this, if you equip the greed card, you
will receive twice as much gold from the jewels dropped. The extra gold goes
into your actual gold count, which are the red letters as opposed to the grey
ones.

=4= LEVEL SPECIFIC CARD LIST
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Level 1-1: Cemetery
Objective: Beat the level
Card: Endurance [Gold] [Halves damage taken]
Hardest card in the game to get!
Level 1-2: Atrium Complex
Objective: Destroy all the objects
Card: Haste [Gold] [Game speed is 2x slower]
A nice, easy card to acquire. The way I like to do this is beat the level
normally, by killing all the monsters and opening the exit. All the doors in
the level will be unlocked, so you can go back and systematically search for
anything you forgot to destroy. Most will be out in the open, barrels mainly,
but in case you are having trouble I will tell you of the more obscure
locations for objects. There is a statue of a man spreading his arms, with a
floating health in front of it. This is in the 2nd last room before the exit.
Behind the statue there is a chest you need to destroy. There are also many
rooms on the ground floor with chests inside, so walk a perimeter around the
rooms looking for them. There is a room near the beginning which is connected
to a spiral staircase, with burning lamps above it. Hopefully you can
understand where I'm talking about >
