A new boxing manager game..... will it live up to expectations. Fans like me have often come up
feeling disappointed with the lack of scope offered by many. WBM by the description looked liked it
offered the whole package... 3d fights... venues....multiple belts.
Starting out with a fresh new boxer and an adjustable bank balance according to difficulty things
seemed optimistic. i quickly fell into debt within a couple of years (gametime:2hours) and struggled
to scout opponents whilst under pressure to put them into fights to raise cash. I quit that game and
it took five more restarts to get to grips. 15 years later (gametime) i have a bank balance of 50m 3
WWA title holders and am struggling to work out the best balance for organising my own event because
you can only book your own fighters and i only make a profit if they win.
i have enjoyed this game... you get to employ up to 20 boxers, which provides for a good amount of
micromanagement on a purely business level... they are there to make you money... nothing else
(which meant i ended up favouring weak, point winner fighter much to my lack of preference). the
tactical 3d matches do get repetitive and i found myself skipping to the round end to see the
points. My main fault is with the scouting, with 15+boxers and one scout, its easy to give up
scouting as it bears little fruits before the fight unless you want to plan many months in advance
(a tactic i am about to employ) but if you book your fighter in for a fight in say 4 months you cant
do anything else with him.. better to push him in blind and look to the next fight in 3 months.
Other disappointments are that the three belts are actually tiered in the sense that they represent
a league, which while adding depth to the game dosnt represent the real boxing world. the lack of
any in game emotional attachment to players due to a limited selection of physical appearances
(ihave the fattest looking bantam weight i have ever seen; in fact fatter than my heavyweight).
This game is the best the genre has seen in my book, but i want more.... more personality from my
boxers, more emersment in the boxing world like sponsorship or decent feedback from events to at
least give me guidance.... in fact guidance is one thing this game lack the most because it has
neither provided me with insight to the world of boxing or how to improve.
I have been very negative, only because i waited for a decent game that has rivalled 'world
championship boxing manger' for the amiga and an i live in hope. This game is not the worst. In
fact probably the best we have had in a long while. i give this game a 6/10 because while i have
enjoyed playing it, it will not resurface unlike other great games that are constantly enduring and
replayable
