Sonic is a supersonic, anthropomorphic hedgehog renowned across the world for
stopping Eggman on numerous occasions. When Shadow breaks into the Federal
Reserve Bank and steals a Chaos Emerald, the military blames Sonic; mistaking
him for Shadow due to their near-identical appearances (save for color).

Tails was watching satellite television when he saw a report about how Sonic
was arrested for breaking into the Federal Reserve Bank, and stealing a Chaos
Emerald. Not understanding how Sonic could have done something like that, he
decided to go to Prison Island - the place where Sonic was being held - and
rescue him.
Since the Eclipse Cannon can't be harmed from external attacks, Tails came up
with a way to destroy it from the inside - he made a fake Chaos Emerald that,
while less powerful than a real Emerald, had the same wavelength and
properties. Once that fake Emerald was inserted into the EC's terminal, it
would reverse the energy field inside the other Emeralds and blow up.

Gullible and quick to act, Knuckles is the guardian of the Master Emerald. At
the start of the game, Knuckles was arguing with Rouge since she wanted to take
the ME. When Eggman also tried to steal it, Knuckles shattered it into dozens
of pieces, saying that at least if it's split apart, he can restore it.

Amy is a hedgehog like Sonic, and has a deep infatuation with him. Ever since
she met him, in fact, she's been trying to get him to confess his undying love
for her; feelings that she's convinced he has.

Fifty years ago, Gerald Robotnik created Shadow as the "Ultimate Life Form;"
a being who would not die of old age, nor would be susceptible to diseases -
his primary reason for this was to make a cure for Maria, his granddaughter,
who suffered from NIDS.
But when GUN deemed Project Shadow too dangerous to continue, they invaded the
colony and killed everyone who knew about Shadow, including Maria. Before she
died, though, she put Shadow inside an escape pod, and launched him out of the
colony. GUN captured him (though we don't know how or when), and sealed him
inside Prison Island, in cryogenic stasis.
As of present time, Eggman has - upon reading Gerald's diary and learning that
Shadow was a weapon - come to the Island and set Shadow free. As payment for
releasing him, Shadow told Eggman that he would grant him a wish; and to
fulfill that wish, Eggman needed to bring the Chaos Emeralds to the ARK, so
that the Eclipse Cannon could fire.
Throughout SA2, Shadow remembers that he promised Maria something. He thinks
that she asked for him to avenge her death by destroying all of humanity, but
in reality she asked him to "give [people] a chance to be happy [and] live for
their dreams." While it's never said why his recollection of his promise was
mixed up, it's assumable that it happened due to being frozen for so long.
When Shadow confronted his prototype with Sonic in space at the end of the
game, he wore out his Super form and fell to Earth. It was believed he had
died, however one of Eggman's robots found and rescued him.

By accident, Eggman somehow came across his grandfather's diary, in which was
described a top-secret weapon called "Project Shadow". The diary also said
that the world would be brought to ruin should Shadow be awakened and set
free. Thinking that he might be able to use the weapon to subjugate the Earth,
he set out for Prison Island, where Shadow was being kept in cryogenic stasis.
When Eggman set Shadow free, Shadow said he would grant him a wish. In order
for that wish to be realized, he told Eggman that he needed to bring the seven
Chaos Emeralds to the Space Colony "ARK". By doing that, the Eclipse Cannon
could be powered up, and Eggman would be able to conquer the world.

Rouge is a treasure hunter who loves jewels beyond everything else, and also
has a rivalry (and possible relationship interest) with Knuckles. She tags
along with Eggman, and tries to find out whatever information she can about
Shadow. That is because she was hired by the president to infiltrate the ARK,
hack into its computer, and learn if Shadow was the real Ultimate Life Form.

Gerald was a scientist, and was both Eggman and Maria's grandfather. He lived
aboard the first Bernoulli space-colony named "ARK"; which, at the time of its
creation, was the most advanced research center of its kind. Not very many
people were aware, but Gerald and the others on the Colony were secretly
developing powerful weapons - among them, a laser with the capability to
decimate an entire planet, codenamed as "The Eclipse Cannon".
He was developing that Cannon because of his meeting with Black Doom some time
prior. Back then, he was working on "Project Shadow" (a.k.a. the Ultimate Life
Form), but he needed help. So he asked Black Doom for his assistance, and Doom
agreed under a condition - that in the future, Shadow would give the seven
Chaos Emeralds to him. Gerald said he would, and so Doom used his blood to
bring Shadow the Hedgehog to life. What Gerald didn't know, was that Doom
wanted the Emeralds so that he could teleport the "Black Comet" down to Earth,
and eradicate the humans. So, in an attempt to lessen the effects of the
arrangement, Gerald began construction of the Eclipse Cannon. (He intended for
it to be used to obliterate the Comet).
But when GUN shut down the laboratory, and Maria died, Gerald went insane; she
was the only thing he had left to live for, and with her gone, his life was
meaningless. He made modifications to the Eclipse Cannon's programming, so that
if its power were ever boosted by all the Chaos Emeralds, it would begin a
descent towards Earth, and destroy the planet. He also installed a safeguard;
should anyone try to deactivate the program, the BioLizard - the prototype of
the Ultimate Life Form - would attach itself to the ARK, and override its
controls, thus making it impossible to alter its course.

friends with one of his research projects; the Ultimate Life Form, "Shadow",

Before she died, she said the following as her last words...
"Shadow... I beg of you... please, do it for me... for a better future... for
all the people who live on that planet... give them a chance to be happy. Let
them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That's the reason
that you were brought into this world. Sayonara, Shadow, the Hedgehog."

Gerald Robotnik made BioLizard as the prototype of the Ultimate Life Form, but
due to such flaws as an over-reliance upon life-support systems and being
overly aggressive, it was considered a failure. Gerald later used it in a
"Plan B" scenario; when all seven Chaos Emeralds were put in the Eclipse
Cannon, the ARK would collide with Earth, destroying the planet. Should anyone
try to deactivate the program, the BioLizard would attach itself to the ARK,
and override its controls, thus making it impossible to alter its course.

the Master Emerald shards fly out.

TAILS: Is everyone alright? We should be landing soon.

When it was operational, it was the most advanced research center of

AMY: Now it's an abandoned ARK, wouldn't you say?
SONIC: There's not much time left before Eggman fires that weapon again.
We've got to hurry, let's find the cannon and destroy it!
TAILS: Yeah!
* - He starts accessing the computer in the Tornado, making a diagram of the
ARK come up, which shows its structure and strength in certain areas.
TAILS: Someone designed that weapon to be impenetrable from outside attacks.
Its defense shields are super-strong, so we have to find a way to
destroy it from the inside.
* - He takes out a fake Chaos Emerald.
AMY: Isn't that a Chaos Emerald?
TAILS: It looks like it, doesn't it? But in fact it's a fake one I created
after researching the real Emerald. It has the same wavelength and
properties, but is less powerful than the real one. It's designed to
reverse the energy field inside the Chaos Emeralds, and blow up. It
looks so real, even a machine can't tell the difference. I'll find the
power supply and destroy it. Sonic, you find the control room, okay?

A minor setback... just how could I have let this happen to me? After
collecting the three Chaos Emeralds, something caught my eye. All of a
sudden, the security alarm went off, and I was trapped inside the safe!
From out of nowhere, comes this strong-looking fighter. There's not
much time left before the bomb that Shadow set goes off! Oh, this is
just not my day! First, I've got to take care of business.

* - Rouge runs into a large room, but skids to a stop as she see a GUN robot
in front of her, with the alarm system blaring in the distance.
ROUGE: I can't believe I've come this far... just to fail.

* - In White Jungle, Shadow is walking, holding his radio.
ROUGE (radio): This is Rouge. I've got a small problem... I can't believe that
I'm trapped inside this locked safe with the Chaos Emeralds! I
guess I won't be able to call myself a treasure hunter
anymore...
* - One of the dynamite packs that Shadow set is at 00:09:54 until its
detonation. Shadow pauses, thinking of Rouge, and then he recalls how Maria
was in the same situation; laying helpless against a wall, waiting for her
own inevitable death to come.
SHADOW: Ah... shoot. Troublemaker!
* - He quickly departs deeper into the forest.

* - Shadow flips onto a branch in the Jungle, and Sonic starts talking from
off-screen.
SONIC: Hey, that's...
SHADOW: That blue hedgehog again, of all places!
SONIC: I found you, faker!
SHADOW: Faker? I think you're the fake hedgehog around here. You're comparing
yourself to me? Hah! You're not even good enough to be my fake.
SONIC: I'll make you eat those words!!

* - The dynamite reads 00:01:25, as Sonic and Shadow breath heavily from their
tied battle. Shadow's radio starts to beep.
EGGMAN (radio): Shadow?! What are you doing?! Get back here right now before
the island blows up with you on it!
SONIC: Blows up?!
* - Shadow looks at Sonic, but then jumps back and runs off. With the dynamite
at 00:00:56, he makes it into the security vault where Rouge is. She looks
surprised that he came, and he runs to her. He reaches his hand out to the
Emeralds at he gets closer.
SHADOW: CHAOS CONTROL!!
* - They both warp out of the vault, barely making it out before the dynamite
packs - which reads 00:00:03 - blow up.
The dynamite that Shadow set blow up the Island, and a blast obscures all
sight of the isle, covering it from end to end.

SHADOW: Hmm, you know... I didn't come to save you. I came back for the Chaos
Emeralds.
ROUGE: Yeah, yeah. But then again, that's not the whole story, now, is it?
* - Eggman stretches, and sighs as he enters the room.
EGGMAN: Everything is ready to go!
ROUGE: Are you sure? We only have six of the seven Chaos Emeralds, you know.
SHADOW: That's more than enough for the demonstration. So let's get this show
on the road!
* - He walks to Eggman, and he steps out of his way, looking a tad surprised.

* - In outer space, an asteroid cracks its lower half off, revealing a design
reminiscent of Eggman's face. The 'nose' area splits apart into four stems,
at the center of which is the Eclipse Cannon. The four stems begin
radiating an energy net, which the Cannon launches straight through the sky
at the Moon. Its side is completely torn off, and fire can be seen inside.
EGGMAN: Bwahahahahaha! Bwahahahaha!!
* - A timer counting down from 24:00:00:00 appears on the televisions; when it
times out, the Cannon will fire again, this time at Earth.

* - Eggman is hitting the terminal for the Cannon in frustration (perhaps he
wanted the entire Moon destroyed?).
ROUGE: Why are you so upset? Well that was really impressive. You managed to
create complete havoc on the whole planet! Does this now mean we
control the planet and can do as we choose?
SHADOW: At this rate, the cannon will take too much time to charge up. If you
want to unleash its full potential, you'll need all seven Chaos
Emeralds.
EGGMAN: Where in the world have you been?!
ROUGE: Something happened? *looks at Shadow*
SHADOW: Our threats fell on deaf ears.
ROUGE: [to Eggman] Look at you, throwing a tantrum like a little kid. How
totally embarrassing.
EGGMAN: Don't forget your end of the bargain, Bat-girl! What about that last
